Guy Vanderhaeghe (1941- ), has won five awards for his novels, short stories, and plays. This native of Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, now lives in Saskatoon and teaches creative writing at St. Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan. His novels include: "The Last Crossing" (2002), "The Englishman's Boy" (1996), "Things as They Are?" (1992), "Homesick" (1989), "My Present Age" (1984), and "The Trouble with Heroes" (1983 Borealis). He has also written a book of short stories and two plays.

These seven stories range broadly in time and place - Biblical days, Paris in the 19th century, the returning soldier of World War 2, contemporary Canada; they range equally in their characters - Canadian school boys, Gabriel Dumont, Lazarus...;but each puts its hero-figure in ironic perspective so that the book as a whole asks its readers to consider the nature and role and essential ambiguity its heroes.
